Dear Congressman Van Hollen:

As I am sure you know by now, I filed on October 25 to run in the Democratic Primary in Maryland for the 8th Congressional District seat.  Your voting record with regard to the Iraq War continues to be a mixed one. Most recently, on September 26 of this year, you voted in favor of a Continuing Resolution to keep the Government funded at current levels.  This vote received little media coverage at the time, and many of your constituents would be surprised and disconcerted to know that it contained an estimated 14 billion for the war and occupation of Iraq.  It also had the effect of putting off the vote on the next Supplemental Appropriations bill for some months. But most of your constituents in Maryland CD-8 want an end to the Iraq war and occupation, and they want it now, and they want for their representative in Congress to take a leadership role in ending funding for the war and occupation of Iraq, and in bringing the troops home.

I know that you have your own reasons for voting in various instances the way you have.  Fair enough.  The voters of the 8th Congressional District deserve to hear both sides.  And they deserve to have a choice in the upcoming election cycle.  Thus, I challenge you to a debate.  We have been along this route before, I know.  In the 2006 election cycle, I issued a similar challenge, and you refused to debate me, claiming that your duties as Chair of the DCCC and your trips across the country getting Democrats to run against Republicans left you with no time to debate me.

We both know that you are going to busy this election cycle.  Fair enough!  I will do my best to adjust my own schedule to meet your own schedule demands.  I am sure that there are organizations willing to sponsor such a debate, providing a suitable location and setting up the logistics.  What I am asking of you now is your commitment to debate me publicly, in one or more debates, to be held at such time, or times, that we can agree upon.

                                                                        Sincerely,

 Deborah Vollmer
